Elevated levels of lead in water can pose serious health risks, particularly for pregnant women and young children. Lead primarily enters drinking water through service line materials and household plumbing components. While Sugarmill Woods SD delivers quality water, we cannot control the materials used in residential plumbing systems.

If your water has been sitting unused for several hours, minimize potential lead exposure by running your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for consumption. If concerned about lead content, consider having your water tested. Information about lead in water, testing methods, and exposure reduction is available via the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.

Municipal water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels across land surfaces or underground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and sometimes radioactive materials, and may collect substances from animal or human activities.

Potential contaminants in source water include:

  • Microbial contaminants (viruses, bacteria) from sewage treatment facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
  • Inorganic contaminants (salts, metals) occurring naturally or resulting from urban runoff, wastewater discharges, oil/gas production, mining, or farming
  • Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban stormwater runoff, and residential usage
  • Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile organic compounds from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban runoff, and septic systems
  • Radioactive contaminants occurring naturally or resulting from oil/gas production and mining activities

EPA regulations limit contaminant levels in public water systems to ensure safety, while FDA regulations establish similar standards for bottled water. All water sources typically contain small amounts of various contaminants, though their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk.

Sugarmill Woods SD Municipal Water Report Info

The Homosassa Special Water District operates as a special district established under Florida state law. In 1959, local residents voted to create this special taxing district to provide a safe centralized water system for the community.

The district is governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners elected by registered voters within the district boundaries. Operations follow Chapter 2003-354, Laws of Florida, and Chapter 189, Florida Statutes.

Our fiscal year runs from October 1st through September 30th annually. Property owners within HSWD boundaries receive an annual HSWD AdValorem tax, listed separately on tax bills issued by the Citrus County Tax Collector and on TRIM notices from the Citrus County Property Appraiser's Office.

Our office location: Homosassa Special Water District, 7922 W Grover Cleveland Blvd, Homosassa, FL 34446. Contact Teresa Olds at (352) 628-3740 for additional information.
