• Control valve. The valve runs every regeneration. Look for a proven design, available replacement parts (seals, pistons, injectors) and a metered option that regenerates on actual water use instead of a fixed timer.
• Resin. Resin wears out fastest on chlorinated city water and on well water with iron. Higher-crosslink resin holds up better to chlorine; iron needs pretreatment either way.
• Sizing. An undersized softener regenerates too often and wears out sooner. Size from your hardness in grains per gallon, iron and daily water use.
• Pretreatment. Sediment, iron above what the softener is rated for, and hydrogen sulfide shorten softener life. A filter in front protects the resin.

Iron and Well Water: How Brands Handle It

Iron is where many softeners fail early. A softener can remove a small amount of dissolved (ferrous) iron along with hardness, but iron fouls resin over time and oxidized (red) iron clogs it fast.

A well-sized salt-based softener on properly pretreated water commonly runs 10 to 15 years or more before the valve needs a rebuild or the resin needs replacing. What shortens that:

• Chlorine or chloramine in city water breaking down resin.
• Iron, manganese or sediment fouling the resin bed.
• Salt bridges and mushing in the brine tank.
• Regenerating far more often than needed because of a wrong hardness setting or an undersized tank.

Twin-tank and non-electric designs avoid the short regeneration window, but they are not automatically more reliable than a well-sized single-tank metered softener. Pick the design that fits your water use and the service you can get.
