Valley of The Moon Water District
About Us
Water quality largely depends on the source: purer sources yield better water. The Valley of the Moon Water District utilizes two main sources: Sonoma County Water Agency supply and local groundwater wells. The Water Agency draws from six Ranney Collectors along the Russian River, with supplemental water from three groundwater wells in the Santa Rosa plain.
The Russian River begins in Mendocino County approximately 15 miles north of Ukiah. Its 110-mile channel flows south from headwaters near Potter Valley to the Pacific Ocean near Jenner. Three key reservoirs—Lake Sonoma, Lake Pillsbury, and Lake Mendocino—provide seasonal storage and recharge the river's aquifer.
Water from the Ranney Collectors benefits from natural filtration through the riverbed. The Water Agency treats this water with chlorine for disinfection plus sodium hypochlorite and sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) to adjust pH. Higher pH levels reduce corrosivity, minimizing copper and lead content in the water. The water requires no additional treatment when it reaches the District through the Agency's transmission system.
To supplement the Water Agency supply, the District operates four District-owned wells and one leased groundwater well. In 2017, the District purchased 2,010 acre-feet from the Water Agency and produced 679 acre-feet from local wells.

The Valley of the Moon Water District covers much of the area known as "The Valley of the Moon," a name derived from the Native American term "Sonoma." While Native American presence ended around 1823, the name "Sonoma" endured. The City of Sonoma, neighboring the Valley of the Moon Water District, stands as the oldest city north of San Francisco Bay, incorporated in 1850 and home to the northernmost of California's 21 missions.
In 1834, the Mexican government dispatched General Mariano Vallejo to colonize the Sonoma region. By 1836, he became Commanding General of all Mexican military forces in California, governing lands north of San Francisco Bay during Mexican rule. In 1846, during the Mexican-American War, American forces formally occupied Sonoma and California.
Sonoma incorporated as a city in 1850 but unincorporated in 1862 due to boundary disputes, later reincorporating in 1883 after resolving these issues. Since the mid-1880s, small unincorporated communities northwest of Sonoma—including El Verano, Boyes Hot Springs, Agua Caliente, and Fetters Hot Springs—developed around natural mineral hot springs as spas and resorts promoted by railroad companies. Today, these communities all fall within the Valley of the Moon Water District service area.
Water service in the Valley of the Moon and Sonoma region began with private companies, with Sonoma Water and Irrigation Company (incorporated 1904) among the oldest. Major consolidation occurred in 1921 when this company acquired several others, including Sonoma Valley Water, Light and Power Company, Sonoma Vista Water Company, and Sonoma Water Works. The City of Sonoma purchased the Sonoma Water Works system in 1933.
