The City of Peoria's history dates back to the 1880s, though some might trace the area's settlement to the Native Americans who inhabited and traveled along what is now known as New River. Throughout human occupation of this region, agriculture has been the primary reason for settlement.
Early pioneers constructed adobe homes or utilized large tents - half serving as living quarters while the other half stored grain, hay, and tools. Desert wildlife like venomous snakes, scorpions, and rodents frequently sought shelter from the harsh sun beneath these structures.
Life became particularly challenging when floods destroyed irrigation diversion dams. During these periods, residents faced six-mile journeys to the Grand Canal for household and livestock water, manually filling barrels every other day to meet demands.
With increased activity at Vulture Mine came greater traffic along this route, leading to its designation as Grand Avenue in 1887. By 1888, Peoria secured its place on maps with the establishment of a U.S. Post Office serving its 27 residents.
The town site was surveyed and a well was dug in the northwest corner of section 26, establishing Peoria's center at Washington and Grand Avenue. Central School was built in 1906 to accommodate the growing community and served continuously for 70 years. Today, it houses the Peoria Museum, preserving the area's history.
