About Us
WHAT IS A WATER QUALITY REPORT?
To comply with Maricopa County regulations, Arizona state laws, and EPA standards, the City of Surprise publishes an annual water quality assessment detailing the composition of your municipal water. This document aims to enhance your understanding of your tap water and emphasize the importance of protecting water resources. The report contains information about water sources and composition, analyzed by an ADHS-certified laboratory.
We encourage landlords, businesses, schools, hospitals and other organizations to share this vital water quality information with water users at their locations who may not receive this report directly as they aren't billed customers.
The City of Surprise is proud to present the 2017 Water Quality Report. Each year, we invest in our water infrastructure and staff training to ensure your household water meets or exceeds Safe Drinking Water Standards. During 2017, our team conducted over 4,000 tests screening for more than 80 potential contaminants in this water system. Beyond providing safe water, we collaborate with local, state, and federal agencies to anticipate future water quality regulations.
We invite you to review this report in printed form or on our website at www.surpriseaz.gov. For questions about this report or your municipal water, please call 623.222.1900.
NOTICE OF SOURCE WATER ASSESSMENT
In 2004, the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) completed a source water assessment for four wells used by Surprise. This evaluation examined adjacent land uses that might pose risks to water sources, including gas stations, landfills, dry cleaners, agricultural fields, wastewater treatment plants, and mining operations. After identifying these potential land uses, ADEQ ranked them by their potential impact. The 2004 assessment found no high-risk adjacent land uses near the four wells.
The complete assessment is available for inspection at ADEQ, 1110 W. Washington Street, Phoenix, Arizona 85007, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Electronic copies are available at dml@azdeq.gov. For more information, contact ADEQ's Source Water Assessment and Protection Unit at 602-771-4641 or visit www.azdeq.gov/environ/water/dw/change.html.
HOUSEHOLD WATER CONSERVATION TIPS
INDOOR CONSERVATION:
- Repair leaking faucets, pipes, toilets and plumbing fixtures
- Install high-efficiency faucets, toilets, and appliances
- Wash full laundry loads only
- Don't use toilets as trash cans
- Take shorter showers (5 minutes or less)
- Turn water off while lathering and only use for rinsing
- Don't run water continuously while shaving or brushing teeth
- Pre-soak dishes before washing
- Only run dishwashers when full
OUTDOOR CONSERVATION:
- Water gardens and lawns during early morning or evening hours
- Apply mulch around plants and shrubs
- Adjust irrigation timers quarterly with seasonal changes
- Fix leaks in faucets, irrigation systems, and hoses
- Use water-efficient nozzles
- Use a bucket for car washing, saving the hose for rinsing, or visit a local car wash
HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE MANAGEMENT
Residents can help protect our water by properly disposing of household hazardous chemicals at city-sponsored collection events held twice yearly, and by using pesticides and fertilizers responsibly. For information about Surprise's household hazardous waste events, contact the City at 623.222.1900 or visit www.surpriseaz.gov/hhwevent.
HOME WATER TREATMENT SYSTEMS
If you install home treatment devices like water softeners or reverse osmosis systems to improve taste or odor, always follow manufacturer's maintenance instructions. Neglected maintenance can degrade your water quality. We recommend contacting your treatment system manufacturer for maintenance guidance. For additional information about home treatment systems, contact the Arizona Water Quality Association at 480.947.9850, write to 6819 E. Diamond St., Scottsdale, AZ 85257, or visit www.azwqa.org.

Our History:
Surprise began as just one square mile of farmland in 1938, founded by Flora Mae Statler. The unusual name came from Statler's comment that "she would be surprised if the town ever amounted to much," according to her daughter Elizabeth Wusich Stoft. She would certainly be surprised and proud to see how this small farming community has developed into Arizona's 10th largest city!
