Important Considerations for Homeowners

Multiple devices connected to your water system may impact your water pressure or flow. Equipment like water softeners, filtration systems, and pressure valves should undergo annual maintenance to ensure optimal performance.

Be prepared for potential leaks by knowing the location of your main shut-off valve and water meter. According to Fire Protection Code, all hydrants require 3 feet of clearance in all directions for emergency operations and flushing procedures, including space from plants and landscaping.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) wants consumers to understand that all water sources, including bottled products, naturally contain some level of contaminants. However, their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. Water sources including rivers, lakes, reservoirs, springs and wells can contain various contaminants picked up as water travels across land surfaces or through soil. These may include:

• Microbial contaminants from sewage treatment facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
• Inorganic contaminants like salts and metals occurring naturally or from urban runoff, industrial discharges, oil/gas production, or mining
• Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential usage
• Organic chemicals from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, and waste systems
• Radioactive elements occurring naturally or resulting from oil/gas production

While our water meets EPA standards for arsenic, it does contain low levels of this element. EPA balances understanding of potential health effects against removal costs. Research continues on low-level arsenic exposure, known to cause cancer at high concentrations and linked to circulatory issues.

The EPA establishes regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems, while FDA rules set similar standards for bottled water products. Both aim to provide equivalent public health protection.

Radon, a naturally occurring radioactive gas in some groundwater, may pose health risks when released into indoor air during showering, bathing, or washing. EPA is developing regulations for radon levels between 300-4,500 pCi/L. While inhalation has been linked to lung cancer, the effects of ingestion remain unclear. Elevated lead levels can cause serious health problems, particularly for pregnant women and young children. Lead typically comes from service lines and household plumbing materials. To reduce potential lead exposure, flush your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water after long periods of non-use. For concerns about lead, consider water testing.
