Greensburg Municipal Water Works

We're pleased to present this year's Annual Water Quality Report to our Greensburg community. This document details the high-quality water and services we provide daily to our residents. Our primary mission is delivering safe, reliable municipal water to your home.

Our water comes from two primary sources: Surface water from Flatrock River located 6 miles Northwest of Greensburg on Highway 421, and groundwater from six wells situated in an aquifer running along Freeland Road and North Ireland Street. Detailed information about our wells is available through our Wellhead Protection Program.

We encourage our customers to learn more about their water utility. Our regularly scheduled meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month at 6:00 PM in City Hall (314 W. Washington Street).

The Greensburg Municipal Water Works continuously monitors your water according to Federal and State regulations. Our testing covers the period from January 1st through December 31st, 2017. It's important to understand that all drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably contain at least small amounts of some substances, though their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk.

Water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and sometimes radioactive materials, and can pick up substances from animal or human activity.

Potential contaminants in source water include:

• Microbial contaminants like viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
• Inorganic contaminants such as salts and metals, which can be natural or result from urban runoff, industrial wastewater, oil/gas production, or farming
• Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, stormwater runoff, and residential uses
• Organic chemicals, including synthetic and volatile compounds from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban runoff, and septic systems
• Radioactive substances that may occur naturally or result from oil/gas production and mining

The EPA sets regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems, while FDA regulations establish similar limits for bottled water. Some people may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general population, including those with compromised immune systems (cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, HIV/AIDS patients), the elderly, and infants. These individuals should seek advice from healthcare providers about their drinking water.
