About Us
WATER SOURCE AND TREATMENT varies based on well location, system demands, and your residential area. The Village utilizes eight water wells drawing from four distinct groundwater aquifers: Sand and Gravel, Silurian Dolomite, Ironton-Galesville, and St Peter.
Each well connects to a specialized water treatment facility designed for the specific water type extracted. Four of our deep wells undergo ion-exchange softening to reduce barium and/or radioactive elements including gross-alpha emitters and radium, meeting Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) standards. These contaminants frequently appear in northern Illinois' deep sandstone formations.
Our four shallow wells receive iron-removal filtration treatment to eliminate excess iron content. Additionally, all water receives chlorine disinfection, polyphosphate treatment for lead and copper corrosion prevention, and where required, fluoride addition to comply with state dental health regulations.
After complete treatment, water travels through the distribution system to storage facilities, fire hydrants, and ultimately to your home or business. The IEPA completed a source water assessment determining that Wauconda's water supply isn't susceptible to contamination, based on the 1993 well site survey, water quality analyses, and available hydrogeologic data. For more information, visit the Public Works facility at 302 Slocum Lake Road or review the assessment summary at: HTTP://www.a.state.il.us/CGI-bin/wp/swap-fact-sheets.pl.
