SOURCE WATER INFORMATION
Wheeling receives Lake Michigan water through the Northwest Water Commission (NWWC), which obtains water from the City of Evanston. Evanston utilizes three water cribs located over a mile offshore in Lake Michigan. After pumping lake water to their treatment plant, Evanston implements comprehensive treatment processes including coagulation/flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection. The treated water travels through a 60-inch transmission main to NWWC's 25 million gallon reservoir before being pumped to Wheeling's three receiving stations.

WATER SOURCE DETAILS
Municipal water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels across land or underground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and sometimes radioactive materials, and can pick up substances from animal presence or human activity. Potential contaminants in source water include:

  • Microbial contaminants like viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
  • Inorganic contaminants including salts and metals that occur naturally or result from urban runoff, wastewater discharges, oil/gas production, mining, or farming
  • Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban storm water runoff, and residential usage
  • Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile compounds from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, runoff, and septic systems
  • Radioactive contaminants that may be naturally occurring or result from oil/gas production and mining operations

All water, including bottled water, reasonably contains at least small amounts of some contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.
