About Us
Municipal water, including bottled varieties, can typically contain small amounts of various contaminants. The presence of these substances doesn't necessarily indicate a health hazard. For additional information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the Environmental Protection Agency's Safe Water Hotline (800-426-4791).
Certain populations may have greater vulnerability to water contaminants than others. People with compromised immune systems - including cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, individuals with HIV/AIDS, elderly residents, and infants - may face increased infection risks. These individuals should seek guidance from healthcare providers regarding their water consumption.
EPA/CDC guidelines on reducing Cryptosporidium and microbial contamination risks are available through the Safe Water Hotline (800-426-4791). Elevated lead levels can cause serious health problems, particularly for pregnant women and young children. Lead in tap water primarily comes from materials in service lines and home plumbing fixtures. ALTOONA HYDRANT delivers quality water but cannot control plumbing component materials.
To minimize potential lead exposure, flush your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for consumption or cooking, especially after periods of non-use. If concerned about lead content, consider water testing. More information on lead testing and exposure reduction is available from the Safe Water Hotline or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.
In July 2017, we failed to monitor for Haloacetic Acids (HAA5) and Total THM. While adverse health effects, if any, are unknown, monitoring procedures have been corrected to prevent future violations. Follow-up sampling and testing for HAA5 and TTHM on August 3, 2017 showed results below specified limits, suggesting the water remained safe during the monitoring lapse.
SOURCE WATER ASSESSMENT: This utility obtains water from the sandstone and dolomite of the Cambrian-Ordovician aquifer, which has low contamination susceptibility due to natural protection from surface contaminants. Wells may have minimal vulnerability to underground storage tanks, contaminant spills, and excess fertilizer. A detailed source water analysis is available from the Water Operator at 515-967-4464.
