Iowa Water Utility Companies

Marshalltown continues to transform through significant infrastructure projects. In 2017, Combinant Energy completed construction of a $700 million, 650-megawatt generating facility capable of powering over 500,000 homes across Iowa and Minnesota. This modern plant replaces much of the older coal-fired operation while maintaining 150 megawatts for peak demand periods. The project created 15-20 permanent positions and employed 200-350 workers during construction, with Alliant Energy remaining the city's largest taxpayer.

Healthcare services improved when Unity Point Health acquired the former Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center in May 2017. This transition secures stable medical services for residents and focuses on recruiting high-quality physicians and healthcare professionals, with future development planned for the south campus location.

Education facilities have seen major investments, with Marshalltown School District completing an extensive $12 million renovation of the Marshalltown High School Roundhouse. The first phase modernized the gymnasium with efficient climate systems, new flooring, improved bleachers, and updated locker rooms. Phase two, currently underway at a cost of $3.85 million, will add another gymnasium and wrestling room. The MarthaEllen Tye Foundation has pledged a $1 million challenge grant once the community raises matching funds, with $2.8 million already secured.

Commercial development continues with Hawkeye Hotels constructing a $10 million Holiday Inn Express scheduled to open in early 2018. The Walking Creek housing development has broken ground, with plans for 52 townhomes across multiple building configurations, representing over $10 million in residential investment.

The Marshalltown Business-Education Alliance brings together the Chamber of Commerce, Community School District, Iowa Valley Community College, and business leaders to align educational outcomes with workforce needs. This partnership focuses on expanding career pathways, engaging business input in curriculum development, improving community perceptions of education, and advocating for policies that enhance educational quality.

Since 2003, Marshalltown has successfully secured over $12.6 million in Lead Hazard Control Grants from HUD, making 722 housing units lead-safe through renovations like window replacements and siding installation. The current $3.4 million grant will improve 130 additional homes across four counties over three years.

Infrastructure maintenance remains a top priority, with a five-year Capital Improvement Program guiding development. In September 2016, residents approved construction of a $17.5 million joint Police and Fire Building, funded through general obligation bonds and scheduled for completion in January 2019.

Marshalltown has received recognition for financial reporting excellence from the Government Finance Officers Association for multiple consecutive years. In 2012, the city was selected as an All American City by the National Civic League, one of just 13 communities to receive this prestigious honor, and was a finalist for the 2014 award.
