Des Moines Water Works implements a comprehensive monitoring program to assess challenging source waters and treat them effectively. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) establishes regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems to ensure safety. This annual report summarizes information about water sources, detected contaminants, compliance status, and educational insights.

The utility operates three treatment facilities across central Iowa, each employing multiple protective barriers. These safeguards include source water monitoring, riverbank filtration, treatment processes (softening, filtration, disinfection), and distribution system maintenance.

The Taylorsville plant in northern Polk County serves northern Des Moines residents, treating up to 10 million gallons daily from the Des Moines River using ultra-filtration and reverse osmosis technology. As Iowa's largest membrane treatment facility, it represents cutting-edge water processing.

The L.D. McMullen Facility at Maffitt Reservoir treats up to 25 million gallons daily from the Raccoon River, serving southwest Des Moines and portions of Warren County, Waukee, Clive, Urbandale, and West Des Moines. Water is collected through innovative radial extractor wells that provide natural filtration.

All other service areas receive water from the Fleur Drive Treatment Plant, which processes up to 75 million gallons daily from three sources: Raccoon River, Des Moines River, and an Infiltration Gallery of underground pipes along the Raccoon River. Staff scientists test source water daily to determine optimal treatment approaches.

Once treated, the water travels through more than 1,300 miles of underground mains to homes and businesses throughout the metropolitan area. The utility's surface water sources (including Crystal Lake, Des Moines River, Maffitt Reservoir, and Raccoon River) have high susceptibility to contamination from watershed activities.

Municipal water, including bottled varieties, may contain small amounts of some contaminants, though their presence doesn't necessarily indicate health risks. Immunocompromised individuals, cancer patients, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS, some elderly residents, and infants may face increased vulnerability to waterborne infections and should consult healthcare providers about water consumption.
