About Us
Lead in Municipal Water: Elevated lead levels pose serious health risks, particularly for pregnant women and young children. While the Americus water system delivers quality water, it cannot control materials used in household plumbing components.
When water sits stagnant for several hours, you can reduce potential lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for consumption or cooking. If concerned about lead, consider water testing. Information about lead in water, testing methods, and exposure reduction is available from the Safe Water Hotline at 800-426-4791 or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.
Water Quality Monitoring: To ensure safety, EPA establishes limits on contaminant levels in public water systems. Americus treats water according to these regulations, similar to how FDA regulates bottled water standards for public health protection.
The water quality data in our annual report lists all detected contaminants during the 2016 calendar year. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. Unless noted otherwise, this data represents testing from January through December 2016. Some contaminants require less frequent monitoring as concentrations typically remain stable year to year.
For additional information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the EPA's Safe Water Hotline at 800-426-4791.
