About Us
Your municipal water meets the Environmental Protection Agency's ("USEPA") safe drinking water standard for arsenic, though it contains trace levels of this element. USEPA's standards balance current understanding of arsenic's health impacts against treatment costs. The agency continues researching the effects of low-level arsenic exposure, which is known to cause cancer at high concentrations and is linked to skin problems and circulatory issues.
Note: Beyond the substances listed in this report, Arizona Water Company tested for over 90 additional compounds, with none detected in the water supply. The data presented comes from the most recent testing conducted under applicable regulations. Some substances are monitored less frequently than annually because their concentrations rarely change or they're unlikely to be detected.
For questions about this water quality report, please contact Regina Lynde, Environmental Compliance Manager, Arizona Water Company, P.O. Box 29006, Phoenix, Arizona 85038-9006; telephone (602) 240-6860 or email mail@azwater.com.
In 2001, the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) completed a Source Water Assessment of Apache Junction's water sources. They evaluated adjacent land uses that might pose potential risks and determined the water sources had a low risk level. The complete Assessment is available for inspection at ADEQ offices in Phoenix. Electronic copies can be requested from ADEQ at dml@azdeq.gov.
Municipal water, including bottled water, may reasonably contain small amounts of some substances. This doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. Immunocompromised individuals, including cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS, certain elderly individuals, and infants may be particularly vulnerable to waterborne contaminants and should consult healthcare providers about their water consumption.
Water sources include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water moves over land or underground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive materials. It may also pick up substances from animal presence or human activity. Potential contaminants include:
- Microbials like viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment, septic systems, agriculture, and wildlife
- Inorganics such as salts and metals, either naturally occurring or from urban runoff, wastewater discharges, oil/gas production, mining, or farming
- Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential use
- Organic chemicals from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban runoff, and septic systems
- Radiological materials, either naturally occurring or from oil/gas production and mining
If present, elevated lead levels can cause serious health issues, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead typically comes from materials in service lines and home plumbing. While Arizona Water Company provides quality water, it cannot control plumbing component materials. When your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize potential lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking.
