The town began as Menotomy in 1635, later becoming West Cambridge in 1807, and finally Arlington in 1867 - named to honor heroes buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Throughout its history, Arlington played a significant role in the American Revolution, with over half of April 19, 1775's casualties occurring within its borders.
Once a thriving agricultural and mill town with seven mills along Mill Brook and famous market gardens producing "Arlington lettuce" shipped along the East Coast, Arlington has evolved into primarily a residential community. The town's ice industry on Spy Pond was also notable, shipping ice as far as India.
