The South Acton Water Treatment Plant, completed in June 2015, has a capacity of 1.7 MGD. The treatment process begins with dedicated packed tower aeration systems for each source (School St. and Assabet wells). This initial step removes volatile compounds, elevates water pH, and provides preliminary oxidation.

The aerated water then moves to rapid mix tanks where potassium permanganate is added for final oxidation and potassium hydroxide for additional pH adjustment. The facility includes a polyaluminum chloride injection system for color and organics control if needed in the future.

After chemical treatment, water flows through parallel flocculation tanks to form floc particles before entering a equalization tank. The pre-treated water is then pumped to dedicated feed water storage tanks on each membrane skid. Microfiltration membranes filter the water via dedicated permeate pumps.

Post-filtration treatment includes sodium hypochlorite for disinfection and sodium fluoride for fluoridation. The treated water passes through a baffled clearwell for contact time before distribution. The plant includes Flux-Maintenance and Clean-in-Place processes for membrane cleaning, with backwash water collected in recycling tanks. Supernatant is returned to rapid mix tanks while collected solids go to on-site lagoons or sewer systems.

The South Acton Water Treatment Plant has maintained high efficiency since its completion. Its primary purpose is removing naturally occurring iron and manganese from five district wells, processing approximately 40% of the District's water supply.
