The Marshfield Waterways Committee has developed a comprehensive Rivers and Waterways Management Plan to protect and enhance the town's valuable water resources. This initiative addresses several critical aspects:

Purpose and Authority: The Committee's mission is to recommend policies and regulations that promote safety, navigation, fishing interests, and resource management for Marshfield's waterways.

Planning Area: The plan encompasses all coastal waters within Marshfield's boundaries, including the North River, South River, and Green Harbor River, plus numerous tributaries. The planning region extends to the municipal borders with Scituate and Duxbury.

Natural Resources: Marshfield's more than 200 acres of beaches serve multiple functions - as wildlife habitat, natural storm protection, and recreational areas that boost the local economy. These beaches are part of a natural sand movement system that experiences ongoing changes, both from natural events and human interventions.

Implementation: The Committee tracks progress through an implementation matrix and provides annual reports to the Board of Selectmen. The plan is designed to be updated every five years to address evolving needs and conditions.

Public Involvement: Local residents were actively encouraged to participate through public meetings and regular committee sessions, ensuring community input shaped the plan's development.

This initiative represents Marshfield's commitment to sustainable management of its waterways, balancing environmental protection with recreational use and infrastructure needs.

Marshfield Water Department Municipal Water Report Information

The Town of Marshfield is located in Southeastern Massachusetts in Plymouth County, approximately 30 miles from Boston. This waterfront community has a year-round population of about 25,000 that increases to roughly 40,000 during summer months. With over 350 years of history dating to pre-revolutionary times, Marshfield is perhaps best known as the home of Daniel Webster from 1832 until 1852, when the prominent national political figure was known as "the Farmer of Marshfield."

Covering 31.70 square miles (28.50 of land and 3.25 of water), Marshfield maintains a traditional New England governance structure with a three-member board of selectmen, an executive, and open town meetings. The community provides essential services including public safety, education, water and sewer infrastructure, waste removal, recreation facilities, public library, and senior services. Both water/sewer operations and waste management are funded through enterprise funds.

The Water Division is responsible for ensuring a reliable supply of safe water for both residential use and fire protection. Their duties encompass installation and maintenance of water infrastructure, operation of wells and pumping systems, water treatment including chlorine and lime injection for disinfection and pH control, meter installation and reading, water quality testing, and resource protection. The division also conducts community outreach on conservation issues and collaborates with Engineering staff to plan for the town's future water requirements.
