In September 1944, the Seekonk Post War Public Works Committee convened to assess post-war infrastructure needs across Commonwealth districts. A town-wide water supply emerged as the highest priority project, prompting a comprehensive study of neighboring communities' water systems.
Engineering firms were consulted to provide detailed implementation plans for establishing a municipal water supply. The committee formally submitted a request to develop a public water system for Seekonk Town, which received state approval. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts officially recognized the Seekonk Water District in 1946.
The district's first 50 years began with its inaugural meeting on April 15, 1946, where funds were allocated to initiate the water system installation. By 1947, the Seekonk Water District became operational with a water storage tank and 27 miles of mains and service connections covering the town's most populated areas.
As the district expanded, additional projects were undertaken to meet growing demand. In 1961, voters unanimously approved construction of a second water storage tank. By 1966, plans were approved for a new Water District Office adjacent to the Junior High School—a facility still in use today. Emergency connections to Pawtucket Water were established in 1979, and in 1986, voters approved construction of the district's fifth well and pump station. A computerized billing system was implemented in 1988.
Significant growth led to the development of a comprehensive Master Plan, with Phase I of this multi-year expansion program adopted in 1992. During this phase, a third water storage tank was constructed to serve the community's needs.
