We're pleased to present this year's Annual Water Quality Report (Consumer Confidence Report) as mandated by the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). This document outlines where your water originates, what it contains, and how it measures against regulatory standards.

Our water supply comes from 12 wells in the Jerome Fork Basin, with depths ranging from 70 to 300 feet. According to Ohio EPA studies, our aquifer has high contamination susceptibility due to:

  • Thin clay layer providing minimal protection
  • Shallow water table depth
  • Presence of potential contamination sources in protected areas

Some individuals may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general population. Those with compromised immune systems—including cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS, elderly residents, and infants—should seek medical advice about their drinking water. The EPA/CDC offers guidelines on reducing infection risks from Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants via the Safe Water Drinking Hotline (800-426-4791).

The City of Ashland has implemented an Ohio EPA-approved protection plan to safeguard residents' health, protect our water supply investment, and preserve our groundwater resources for future generations.

What are the benefits of trees?

  • Improved air quality
  • Energy conservation
  • Stormwater management
  • Noise reduction
  • Wildlife habitat and food
  • Extended pavement lifespan
  • Lower sidewalk and street temperatures

Visit the national tree benefits calculator at http://www.treebenefits.com/calculator/ to calculate the value of specific trees.

When do I need a tree permit?

Generally, permits are required to remove trees on both private and public property. Permission is also needed to prune or plant trees in City right-of-way areas. If uncertain, contact Building and Licensing at 302-227-4504.

Why must trees be protected during construction?

Construction activity beneath a tree's canopy (dripline) can damage or kill the tree. Most roots are located in this zone within the top 2 feet of soil. Avoid root cutting and soil compaction whenever possible.

What can I do about tree roots damaging my sidewalk?

For city-planted trees on public property, contact Building & Licensing at 302-227-4504. The city will evaluate each situation to determine the best solution. For trees on private property, the city may still provide recommendations.

How do I address tree roots entering my sewer lines?

Tree roots typically only invade older, leaking lines, with clay pipes being particularly vulnerable. Intact sewer lines rarely experience root intrusion. A plumber can use camera inspection to diagnose root problems. While line replacement is ideal, root removal and repairs may be alternatives.

Who maintains trees near power lines?

Delmarva Power coordinates pruning and removal of trees affecting power lines. Contact them at 1-800-375-7117 for assistance.

How do I report trees blocking intersections or sidewalks?

Complete and submit a Tree Inspection Request form, and the City Arborist will assess the situation to determine appropriate action.
