Alabama Water Utility Companies

The Town of Athens Utilities draws its water from Elk River at a location near the former TVA fish hatchery just downstream from the Easterferry Street Bridge. This water originates in Tennessee's Cumberland Plateau region, where two TVA reservoirs (Tims Ford and Woods) ensure minimum river flow.

Despite several treated wastewater discharges into Elk River from Tennessee communities (including Tullahoma, Winchester, Fayetteville, and Pulaski), there are no major industrial discharges in the watershed. Most water comes from forest and farmland runoff, with minimal row cropping in the watershed. This means the heavy concentrations of herbicides and pesticides common in the Tennessee River valley are largely absent here.

Due to these favorable watershed characteristics, Elk River water contains few regulated contaminants. TVA completed a comprehensive Source Water Study of all areas along Elk River upstream from our intake point. No immediate concerns were identified, and this study was approved by ADEM and published in 2002.

The Athens Water Treatment Plant is located northwest of the City on Section Line Road, approximately halfway between Alabama Highway 99 and Easterferry Road. Water treatment includes chemical coagulation, sedimentation, multi-media filtration and chlorine disinfection. The chlorine is added to filtered water that circulates through large contact chambers to ensure complete pathogen elimination before distribution. We also add fluoride to help prevent tooth decay and lime or caustic soda to increase pH levels, which reduces water corrosivity and enhances taste.
