Bangor Township was established on March 22, 1859, becoming Bay County's third township. It was formed alongside Arenac and Portsmouth townships. Initially, Bangor encompassed the present-day townships of Fraser, Kawkawlin, and Monitor.
In 1868, Kawkawlin Township was created from Bangor's northern section. The following year, Monitor Township formed from Bangor's southern portion, comprising 30 sections of township 14 north of range 4 east, plus sections 30 and 31 of township 14 north of range 5 east.
The township petition was submitted by John G. Kiesel, John Gies, Charles Nickel, Scott W. Sayles, Frederick Kiesler and Mathew Miller from Hampton Township. At that time, Joseph Trombley was Bangor's largest landowner.
The first town meeting occurred April 7, 1859, with Scott W. Sayles appointed Supervisor and Scott W. Sayles, John Raymond, and Frederick Kiesler serving as Election Inspectors. Thomas Whitney, originally from Bangor, Maine, selected the township name. He operated a mill on the river's east side.
In 1877, Bangor ceded substantial territory to West Bay City, which later became part of Bay City in 1905. During the 1880s, three active coal mines operated in Bangor. Historically, the township's population concentrated near the Saginaw River, particularly along Marquette Avenue, which featured numerous small merchant businesses.
