SOURCE WATER ASSESSMENT
The purpose of Source Water Assessment is to analyze vulnerability and determine susceptibility of New Baltimore's municipal water supply to potential contamination sources. Sensitivity is determined by the natural environment of the source water and indicates natural protection provided to the water source.
Using established procedures from the Great Lakes Protocol and Michigan Source Water Assessment Program, along with a two-dimensional hydrodynamic model of the St. Clair River-Lake St. Clair-Detroit River Waterway, the New Baltimore Water Treatment Plant intake has been identified as having a high degree of sensitivity to potential pollutants.
WATER QUALITY AND SAFETY
Municipal water sources (including tap water and bottled water) come from rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves natural minerals, radioactive material, and can pick up substances from animal or human activities.
Potential contaminants in source water include:
- Microbial contaminants such as viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants including salts and metals that occur naturally or result from urban runoff, industrial discharge, or agricultural practices
LEAD AND COPPER INFORMATION
Elevated lead levels can cause serious health problems, particularly for pregnant women and young children. Lead in municipal water primarily comes from materials in service lines and home plumbing components. While the City of New Baltimore Water Division provides high-quality water, they cannot control materials used in household plumbing.
If your water has been sitting for several hours, minimize lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. For lead testing information, contact the Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791 or visit http://www.epa.gov/drink/info.
INFORMATION FOR VULNERABLE POPULATIONS
Some individuals may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general population. Those with compromised immune systems (such as cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS, elderly individuals, and infants) should seek advice from healthcare providers regarding municipal water consumption.
WATER TREATMENT TECHNOLOGY
The City of New Baltimore utilizes membrane filtration, the most advanced filtration technology available, provided by G.E. (visit www.ge.com for more information). We've also increased treatment capacity from 2 MGD (Million Gallons per Day) to 6 MGD.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
The New Baltimore city council meets the second and fourth Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall. All meetings are open to the public.
