Municipal Water Utility Company FAQ

For more information on your municipal water, visit the U.S. CDC:
Barberton City Municipal Water Company and CDC- What can I do to lower my utility bill? The best way to reduce your bill is to manage your consumption. First, become familiar with how much, where and when you use water. Aquahawk is an excellent tool that uses smart meter technology to help with this task.
- Why do I need the last 4 digits of my Social Security number or account number to pay the bill? The City has implemented protocols to prevent identity theft. Personal or account information, including balance due, cannot be provided in person or by phone without either the account number or last 4 digits of the account holder's social security number. This protects citizens from identity theft and prevents financial losses to the city from unauthorized charges.
- When can I expect to receive my deposit refund? Normally deposits are applied to final bills when accounts are closed. Residential account holders may request their deposit be applied to their current bill if they've maintained good standing for at least a year. Commercial account deposits can only be applied when accounts are closed. This area of City code is currently under review.
- Who determines deposits and how are they calculated? Residential deposits are based on credit scores: Green ratings require no deposit, Yellow ratings require a deposit equal to the highest bill for that address during the previous year, and Red ratings require twice that amount. All commercial accounts require deposits equal to five times the highest bill for that address during the previous year.
- Why must I set up new utilities for my new address instead of transferring from my old one? Our account numbers are tied to addresses and meters, not customers. We must enter new information for each account number at each address and require a current signature for each new service agreement, even for long-term customers.
Per City code, utility bills are due on the first day of the month and can be paid without penalty until the 20th (or next business day if the 20th falls on a weekend or holiday). Service may be discontinued if a minimum balance of $35.00 remains unpaid five days after the 20th. This date varies monthly and is printed on all late notices.
We offer automatic payment options that can debit your checking, savings or credit card account, typically on the 15th of each month. Setup can be completed in person at city hall or online.
The water emergency surcharge of $0.25 per 1,000 gallons is earmarked to fund litigation efforts over water issues.
