About Us
Batavia's municipal water comes from both shallow and deep groundwater wells. The city's treatment facility processes this water through several methods:
Shallow well water undergoes filtration to remove iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide, followed by chlorination, fluoridation, and corrosion inhibitor treatment. Deep well water is processed using an HMO adsorption system specifically designed to remove radium. All treated water is then combined in a ground storage reservoir before distribution.
Water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or through the ground, it naturally dissolves minerals and can pick up substances from animal presence or human activity.
Potential contaminants in source water include:
- Microbial contaminants from sewage facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations and wildlife
- Inorganic compounds including naturally-occurring salts and metals or urban runoff
- Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, stormwater runoff, and residential usage
- Organic chemicals from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, and septic systems
- Radioactive materials that occur naturally or result from oil/gas production and mining

Batavia Municipal Water Company and EPABatavia Municipal Water Report Information
The EPA requires all public water systems to produce annual Consumer Confidence Reports detailing water quality testing results, treatment methods, and potential health risks. These reports help residents understand what's in their tap water and whether it meets federal safety standards.
Regular testing helps identify potential issues before they become serious health concerns. Contaminant levels are measured against Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) established by the EPA to protect public health.
