About Us
What is a Water Quality Report? Illinois American Water releases an annual document describing the quality of your municipal water in accordance with state and United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) regulations. This report aims to increase awareness about water quality standards and highlight the importance of protecting your water resources.
At our advanced testing laboratory in Belleville, Illinois, we conduct thousands of tests annually, monitoring water quality at every stage of treatment and delivery. In 2017, we tested for hundreds of potential contaminants, including those with federal and state maximum allowable levels. This overview presents last year's water quality results and information about your water composition.
Partnership for Safe Water Program: Illinois American Water's Alton District voluntarily participates in the USEPA's Partnership For Safe Water, a national program designed to achieve operational excellence in water treatment. In 2013, the Alton facility received the prestigious Ten Year Director's Award under this program, recognizing utilities that achieve excellence through optimizing treatment operations and adopting performance goals exceeding federal and state requirements.
Source Water Information: Illinois EPA considers all surface water sources of community supply potentially vulnerable to contamination issues, necessitating mandatory treatment including coagulation, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection. The Alton facility draws surface water from the Mississippi River, which can be affected by agricultural, municipal, and industrial activities. Farm chemicals may seasonally increase in the river, but comprehensive monitoring and treatment ensure quality regardless of source water variations.
Environmental Stewardship: Water is one of our most precious natural resources. Our environmental protection efforts include student education programs, community events, environmental partnerships, and internal initiatives. We reach thousands of students yearly through educational outreach, including school visits and our Mobile Education Center. We participate in river cleanup efforts and conservation events throughout Illinois.
