About Us
The Illinois EPA has completed a Source Water Assessment for Galesburg's municipal supply. Residents who would like a copy of this information can contact the Water Division at 309/345-3649.
For a summary of the Source Water Assessment, including information about water importance, contamination susceptibility, and protection efforts, visit the Illinois EPA website at http://www.epa.state.il.us/cgi-bin/wp/swap-fact-sheets.pl.
Regarding contamination susceptibility, the Illinois EPA reviewed engineering reports for Galesburg and determined the community water supply is vulnerable to SOC and VOC contaminants. However, due to regular monitoring at wells and distribution entry points, plus proactive land use management and source water protection by the city, Galesburg's water is not susceptible to IOC contamination.
In preparation for the EPA's Ground Water Rule, Illinois EPA determined Galesburg's wells are not vulnerable to viral contamination. This assessment considered proper well construction, hydrogeologic barriers preventing pathogen movement, mitigation of potential contamination routes, absence of disease outbreak history, and no viral contamination risk in the sanitary survey.
The city has implemented a comprehensive wellhead protection program including management and education committees, source water protection strategies, and contingency planning. These efforts earned Galesburg a special exception permit from Illinois EPA, reducing required SOC and VOC monitoring and saving significant laboratory analysis costs.
