About Us
Bethpage Water District draws water from 9 groundwater wells tapped into the Magothy aquifer beneath Long Island. Currently, only 8 wells actively contribute to the distribution system. Well No. 4-1 remains in reserve due to elevated radium levels approaching regulatory limits.
Our water sources, like all natural water supplies, acquire minerals and sometimes contaminants as they travel through soil and rock layers. These substances can include naturally occurring minerals, radioactive materials, and compounds from animal presence or human activities.
Potential contaminants in source water fall into several categories:
- Microbial contaminants
- Inorganic compounds
- Pesticides and herbicides
- Organic chemicals
- Radioactive materials
To ensure safe tap water, New York State and EPA regulations establish limits for contaminants in public water systems. Similarly, FDA regulations set standards for bottled water that provide equivalent public health protection.
The Bethpage Water District conducts extensive testing, monitoring over 135 separate parameters multiple times annually across all wells. The table on page five shows which substances were detected. Many naturally occurring elements found in Long Island water pose no health concerns.
Our dedicated team works around the clock to deliver quality municipal water throughout the community. We encourage all residents to help protect our vital water resources for our community, lifestyle, and future generations.

Established in 1923, Bethpage Water District stands as one of Long Island's oldest water authorities. Our supply comes from 8 wells across 5 pumping stations, with a combined capacity exceeding 11,000 gallons per minute. Together, these wells deliver approximately 1.4 billion gallons annually to our community.
For peak usage periods, our 3 storage tanks hold 4.25 million gallons in reserve. All wells and distribution infrastructure comply with New York State Department of Health public water standards.
Though relatively small in scale, today's Bethpage Water District maintains:
- Over 8,800 customer accounts
- A professional staff of 12 full-time employees
- 107 miles of water mains throughout the district
- Modern technology including backup generators at all well sites
- 1068 fire hydrants for community safety
We serve a 5-square-mile region encompassing Bethpage, Old Bethpage, Plainview, Farmingdale, and Levittown. Each customer's water usage is digitally monitored and billed accordingly. Unlike New York City, our supply is exclusively groundwater-sourced rather than reservoir or surface water based.
