General Water District Planning and Management

The Water District continually assesses supply needs against projected growth through 2023. The Commonwealth reviews water withdrawal permits every five years, with potential reductions if benchmarks aren't met. Critical thresholds include residential usage exceeding 65 gallons daily or pipe leakage above 10%. Through education and outdoor restrictions, we manage withdrawals to avoid penalties.

Service and Responsibility Questions

The Water District maintains water mains, connections to shut-off valves, meters, and reading devices. Customers are responsible for:

  • Service lines from the shut-off valve to properties
  • All private property plumbing
  • Meter pits for ground-located meters
  • Repairs to inadequately protected frozen meters

Billing and Usage Concerns

If you receive an unusually high bill, request a meter reading verification or check yourself. Accurate readings with no household changes typically indicate leaks, often from incomplete toilet seals. These leaks may be intermittent and silent. Leak detection tablets are available at our office. Note that regulations don't permit leak abatements.

Property Transfers

When selling property, attorneys typically handle final amounts with our office. The District then updates owner information immediately.

Watershed Access Regulations

The Lagoon Pond Well station #1 is a protected watershed on District property. Recent Coal Barn degradation required us to restrict access by locking the second gate. We're working to accommodate previous rights of way while maintaining security. The site is monitored 24/7.

Water Treatment Process

Our five wells and four pumping stations undergo several treatment processes. We add fluoride for dental health, sequester naturally occurring iron and manganese, and adjust pH/alkalinity to reduce pipe corrosion. Continuous testing monitors treatment effectiveness, with additional parameters tested daily, weekly, quarterly or annually per regulations.

Water Source Information

Bridgeport receives water from five sources drawing from the Island's sole aquifer, which recharges from precipitation and water bodies. Through careful usage and pollution prevention, this groundwater remains vital. Our interconnected system can receive emergency support from neighboring systems when needed.

Outdoor Water Restrictions

State regulations govern water withdrawals for public suppliers, farms, and golf courses. Though our system can pump approximately 4 million gallons daily—exceeding average needs most of the year—summer demand approaches capacity. We maintain storage for health and fire safety, and excessive outdoor usage during peak periods impacts these reserves.
