About Us
What is the source of my water? The sources of tap water (both from the tap and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and groundwater wells. As water travels over land surfaces or through soil layers, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive materials, and may pick up substances from animal presence or human activities.
The Department of Natural Resources conducted a source water assessment to determine the vulnerability of our water source to potential contaminants. This process involved establishing source water location boundaries for each well or surface water intake, followed by a contaminant inventory within those areas to assess potential threats. Assessment maps and summary information are available online at http://drinkingwater.Missouri.Edu/swip/swipmaps/pwssid.Htm. To access maps for your water system, you'll need the State-assigned identification code printed at the top of this document.
Why are there contaminants in my water? Municipal water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. More information about contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the Environmental Protection Agency's Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).
Is our water system meeting other regulations? The Missouri Department of Natural Resources regulates our water system and requires regular testing to ensure safety. Our system has been assigned identification number MO3024085 to track our test results. Last year, we tested for various contaminants, with detectable results shown on the following pages of this report. Any violations of state requirements would be explained later in this report.
How can I become actively involved? If you'd like to observe the decision-making process affecting water quality or have additional questions about your municipal water report, please call us at 573-642-6898 for information about scheduled meetings or contact persons.
Do I need special precautions? Some individuals may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general population. Immunocompromised persons, including those undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly individuals, and infants may be particularly susceptible to infections. These individuals should seek advice about municipal water from their healthcare providers. EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate methods to reduce infection risk from Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).

Noticing fewer inactive meters where rural water lines were operating, Callaway Electric Cooperative helped fund essential activities to launch the development of Callaway 2 Water District. In 1971, Callaway 2 Water District was officially incorporated. The district sold its first water in 1975 to approximately 400 customers.
Currently, the Water District has sufficient financial stability to secure private funding through bond offerings for investments that cannot be paid with cash. Callaway County residents receiving rural water service obtain it from one of four rural water districts. Three of these districts, including Callaway 2 Water District, extend service to customers in neighboring counties.
Today, Callaway 2 Water District maintains over 5,100 active meters. Water is supplied from eight wells with adjacent elevated towers. The distribution system includes more than 700 miles of water lines within the corporate boundaries, covering approximately 600 square miles.
Since its inception, the Water District has been governed by a five-member Board of Directors. The original board was court-appointed, with subsequent replacements selected through general elections. Board meetings occur monthly on the second Tuesday at the Water District's central office at 2610 N. Westminster in Fulton. These meetings are open to the public.
The Water District Board and staff are committed to providing a continuous supply of potable water to enhance the community's quality of life, public health, and development.
