Our City's Water History
On October 1, 1800, Spain returned the territory now known as Alexandria to France, which subsequently sold it to the United States in the 1803 Louisiana Purchase. The land was originally granted to Alexander Fulton by Spain in 1785. Fulton, a merchant from Pennsylvania, acquired additional lands from the Choctaw, Tensas, Appalachee, and Pascagoula tribes through his trading post.
Fulton and his business partner William Miller established a trading operation across from the military outpost and received exclusive trading rights with local Native Americans. When tribes accumulated debts they couldn't settle with pelts, they surrendered land parcels instead. This allowed Fulton and Miller to acquire vast acreage, which they later sold to settlers attracted to the fertile lands along Bayou Rapides, Robert, and Beouf.
Alexandria's Naming Origins
Fulton established Alexandria's layout in 1805, and the settlement flourished rapidly due to its strategic location as a transportation, trade, and agricultural hub – advantages that remain relevant today. Historians still debate the origin of the name "Alexandria" – some believe it honors Fulton himself, while others maintain he named the town after his infant daughter who passed away around the time of the town's planning.
