About Us
Water Supply Information: Biloxi draws its water supply from wells in the Pascagoula Development, Graham Ferry Formation, and the Miocene Sequence Aquifer. These sources vary in susceptibility ratings from low to high regarding potential contaminants.
Water Quality Assessment: The results in this report confirm that Biloxi's water system had no violations. Our municipal water meets or exceeds all federal and state requirements. While routine monitoring has detected some contaminants, the Environmental Protection Agency has determined that the water remains safe at these levels.
Regulatory Compliance: The EPA establishes regulations limiting contaminant amounts in public water systems. It's important to understand that all water, including bottled water, reasonably contains small amounts of some contaminants, which doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk.
Testing Protocol: To comply with regulations, the city conducts monthly monitoring for specific contaminants. These regular tests indicate whether the water meets health standards. The Mississippi State Department of Health reviews these monthly reports, with detailed results listed in this annual report.
Questions & Information: For inquiries about water quality, contact Tracey Forehand in the Public Works Department at 228-435-6271 or tforehand@biloxi.ms.us. Detailed susceptibility determination reports are available upon request. Citizens may also attend Biloxi City Council meetings, held on the first, third, and last Tuesdays monthly at Biloxi City Hall.
Contaminant Sources: Water naturally collects substances as it travels over land or underground, including minerals and sometimes radioactive materials. Potential contaminants include:
- Microbial contaminants from sewage treatment, septic systems, agricultural operations
- Inorganic contaminants like salts and metals from natural sources or urban runoff
- Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture and residential uses
- Organic chemical contaminants from industrial processes and petroleum production
- Radioactive contaminants occurring naturally or from resource extraction
Lead Information: Elevated lead levels can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in water primarily comes from service lines and home plumbing materials. While the city provides quality water, we cannot control plumbing component materials. Minimize risk by flushing taps for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water after long periods of non-use.
Vulnerable Populations: Some individuals may be particularly susceptible to contaminants, including those undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS or immune disorders, and some elderly and infants. These individuals should seek advice from healthcare providers about their municipal water consumption.
