The mighty Mississippi River shaped our history and defines our identity. Greenville stands proudly along these powerful waters as a center of music, literature, creativity and Southern hospitality. Our community has weathered significant challenges – from Civil War destruction to natural disasters – yet continues to thrive with remarkable resilience.
Originally established before the Civil War as a prosperous cultural and commercial hub for surrounding cotton plantations, Greenville was completely destroyed by Union forces during the Vicksburg siege. After the war, returning soldiers rebuilt their community on higher ground between Vicksburg and Memphis, seeking protection from the unpredictable river.
Yet challenges continued. The yellow fever epidemic of 1877 claimed a third of residents, including most city leadership. Despite this tragedy, the rich Delta soil enabled cotton production to flourish, bringing renewed prosperity to the region. Nature tested Greenville again with significant floods in 1890 and the catastrophic 1927 flood, when levee failures submerged the entire delta under 10 feet of water for three months – one of America's most devastating natural disasters.
Greenville boasts an extraordinary artistic legacy. In the 20th century, over 100 published writers called Greenville home – more than any comparably-sized town nationwide. Notable residents include historian Shelby Foote, journalist Hodding Carter, novelist Walker Percy, and Muppet creator Jim Henson. Our musical heritage continues through the Greenville Blues Walk and live performances that honor the Delta blues tradition in venues along historic Walnut Street.
