Denton sources its municipal water from Lake Lewisville and Lake Beam Roberts. All water – whether from taps or bottles – originates from sources like rivers, lakes, streams, reservoirs, and springs. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves natural minerals and can become contaminated by animal or human activities.

Potential contaminants in untreated water include:

• Microbial contaminants (viruses and bacteria)
• Inorganic contaminants (salts and metals)
• Pesticides and herbicides
• Organic chemicals from industrial processes
• Radioactive materials

It's important to understand that all water, including bottled varieties, naturally contains some contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. Both tap and bottled water are regulated for safety – the EPA oversees public water systems while the FDA regulates bottled water. Prevention is far more effective than treatment – keeping contaminants out of our lakes is easier and less expensive than removing them later. Improper use of garden chemicals, incorrect disposal of household hazardous waste, and littering are just a few activities that can pollute our water supply.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has assessed our source water and found some sources may be susceptible to certain contaminants. Our sampling requirements are based on this susceptibility assessment and previous test results.

Important Special Notice: Some individuals may be more vulnerable than the general population to certain microbial contaminants, including Cryptosporidium. This includes infants, some elderly people, those undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, individuals on steroid treatments, and people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders. Regarding lead exposure: Elevated lead levels can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in water primarily comes from materials in service lines and home plumbing. While we provide quality water, we can't control the components used in residential plumbing. To minimize lead exposure, flush your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If concerned, you can have your water tested.
