City of El Campo Municipal Water Report Information

In 1882, a railroad settlement was established at the current location of El Campo. Initially called "Prairie Switch" and later "Pearl of the Prairie," the name was eventually changed by Mexican Cowboys to "El Campo," meaning "the camp."

Ranching dominated the early economy, with substantial cattle production annually. The area was surrounded by four major ranches: the Brown Ranch to the north, Texas Land and Cattle Company to the south, Herder Ranch to the west, and Pierce Ranch to the east.

El Campo was officially incorporated in 1905. The first municipal government consisted of a mayor and five council members. Mack Webb was elected as the first mayor with a $10 monthly salary. W.G. McDonald served as the first city attorney, while W.E. Franz became the first city secretary. The initial board members included H.G. Facial hair, E.L. Correll, and W.W. Duson.

Shortly after establishing formal governance, the city expanded police protection and formed a volunteer fire department. Utility services were also enhanced throughout the growing community. The City of El Campo represents the outcome of steady, continuous development by residents who recognized the area's tremendous potential.
