City of Gautier Municipal Water Report Info
The City of Gautier was named after Fernando Upton Gautier, who established Fernando Gautier and Sons Sawmill in 1867 on the Pascagoula River's west bank, catalyzing regional development. The settlement gained recognition when trains began stopping at the sawmill, necessitating its placement on maps. Early residents called the area "Gautier" after seeing the family name prominently displayed on the sawmill's water tower.

Gautier remained predominantly rural until World War II, when Ingalls shipyard workers in nearby Pascagoula began settling in the area. The 1960s brought another growth phase when Litton Industries acquired and expanded the Ingalls facility. Formally incorporated in 1986, Gautier continues to develop as a residential community supporting neighboring casinos and major industries.

The Pascagoula River forms Gautier's eastern boundary, providing residents with abundant water recreation, fishing, and eco-tourism opportunities. This scenic waterway is famously known as the "Singing River" for its mysterious musical sounds, often described as resembling buzzing bees in flight and best heard during early evenings in late summer and autumn.

This phenomenon is tied to the legend of the peaceful Pascagoula tribe's mysterious disappearance. According to local folklore, when a Biloxi princess named Anola fell in love with Altama, the Pascagoula chief, their forbidden romance triggered conflict between the tribes. Facing defeat, the Pascagoula people reportedly joined hands, chanting a death song as they walked into the river. Many believe the gentle sounds heard today are echoes of this ancient song.

Mississippi CDC Tap Water Info

For more information on your municipal water, visit the U.S. CDC:

City of Gautier Municipal Water Company and CDC

How does tap water affect people with health conditions?
Certain individuals may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general population. This includes people undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, individuals with HIV/AIDS or other immune disorders, some elderly residents, and infants. These groups should consult healthcare providers about their water consumption. EPA and CDC guidelines for reducing infection risks from Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available through the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).

Is bottled water superior to tap water?
Bottled water isn't necessarily better than municipal supply. All water sources, including bottled options, may contain small amounts of contaminants. Their presence doesn't automatically indicate health risks. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791). The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) provides information about bottled water standards.

How can I verify my water meets quality standards?
The EPA establishes strict limits on contaminants allowed in municipal water to ensure safety. Most cities utilize modern treatment methods to comply with these standards and implement comprehensive sampling and quality testing programs to verify compliance.

Do water utilities have sufficient resources for growing communities?
Many municipalities make strategic investments in securing long-term, renewable water sources. Cities with Assured Water Supply designations typically maintain 100-year water supply forecasts for current and planned developments, along with necessary distribution and treatment infrastructure to support community growth.

Are high nitrate levels in water a health concern?
Nitrate concentrations exceeding 10 parts per million pose health risks, particularly for infants under six months who may develop "blue-baby syndrome." Nitrate levels can spike temporarily due to rainfall or agricultural activity. Parents caring for infants should consult healthcare providers if concerned. Most municipal water supplies maintain nitrate levels within safe drinking water requirements.

Is a home water treatment system necessary?
Installing home water treatment is a personal choice, often made to improve taste or remove specific impurities. Such systems aren't typically needed for safety reasons. In fact, improperly maintained home treatment systems may create water quality issues affecting health. All treatment devices, including refrigerator dispensers and ice makers, require regular maintenance according to manufacturer guidelines, with filter cartridges replaced as recommended.
