Ensuring Safe Municipal Water

Your tap water comes from groundwater sources: six wells ranging from 280 to 400 feet deep, drawing from the Test aquifer. Hastings works diligently to deliver safe, reliable water meeting federal and state quality standards. This report aims to inform you about your water supply and how to protect our vital water resources.

For questions about Hastings's municipal water, contact Public Works at 651-480-6185 or publicworksdept@hastingsmn.gov. You can also inquire about participating in decisions affecting water quality.

The EPA establishes safe municipal water standards, limiting specific contaminant amounts to ensure tap water safety. Similarly, FDA regulates bottled water contaminants. All water, including bottled varieties, naturally contains some contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate health risks. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the EPA's Safe Municipal Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791.

City of Hastings Municipal Water Report Info

Following the contamination incident in late September, City staff began working with Stantec to conduct a feasibility study exploring options for permanent disinfection methods in the City's water system. A report on this study is expected mid-December, with findings to be discussed with the City Council in January.

Meanwhile, as a precautionary measure, the City continues a very low level of ongoing chlorination in the water system. We understand some residents may continue experiencing unpleasant taste and odor issues during this process, but the water remains safe to consume. These experiences vary for everyone, and the Minnesota Department of Health advises it may take several weeks to notice improvements in taste and odor.

The City Council will review final recommendations from the feasibility study in early 2019 and determine next steps. Until then, please read below for more information about the ongoing low-level chlorination and tips for addressing taste and odor concerns.

Beginning Monday, October 8th, the city will implement low-level chlorination throughout our entire water distribution system. A low concentration of less than 1ppm (parts-per-million), which is five times lower than pool concentrations, will be injected throughout our system while we study permanent disinfection options for Hastings public water system. This action aims to minimize biological contamination risk throughout our system.
