About Us
Certain individuals may have increased vulnerability to contaminants in municipal water compared to the general population. Those with compromised immune systems – including cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune disorders, some elderly individuals, and infants – face heightened risk of infection. These vulnerable groups should seek advice from healthcare providers regarding their water consumption.
EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate methods to reduce infection risks from Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available through the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791) or Nebraska's Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Public Health, Office of Drinking Water at 402-471-2541.
Elevated lead levels can cause serious health complications, particularly for pregnant women and young children. Lead in water primarily comes from materials in service lines and household plumbing components. While community water systems provide quality water, they cannot control plumbing material choices. To minimize lead exposure, flush your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes after water has been sitting before using it for consumption. If concerned about lead, consider water testing through the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791), at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead, or through the DHHS/DPH/Office of Drinking Water (402-471-2541).

Norfolk is located in Northeast Nebraska within Madison County in the Elkhorn River Valley, approximately 112 miles northwest of Omaha, 121 miles north of Lincoln, and 75 miles southwest of Sioux City, Iowa. The city sits at the intersection of U.S. Highways 81 and 275, and Nebraska Highways 24 and 35.
Just 15 miles from Madison (the county seat), Norfolk hosts several branch offices for Madison County administration and a State Highway Patrol Center serving a 23-county region. The city functions as an economic hub for a six-county area, with key industries including manufacturing (employing over 4,059 people), agriculture (both livestock and grain production), education, retail, and wholesale distribution. Norfolk represents the major retail trade center for Northeast Nebraska.
The community's history dates to July 17, 1866, when 44 German families from Wisconsin arrived at the junction of the Elkhorn and North Fork valleys, attracted by the fertile land available for settlement. Originally naming their post office "North Fork" after the river, they suggested "Norfork" as a simpler compound name. Postal authorities, believing this to be a spelling error, changed it to "Norfolk." The Village of Norfolk was officially organized in 1881.
