Carson City Public Works Municipal Water Report Info

The Consolidated Municipality of Carson City serves as Nevada's capital with a rich frontier heritage dating to 1858. Named for the famous scout Christopher "Kit" Carson, the city was established seven years after the first Eagle Station trading post in 1851. Early settler Abraham Curry showed remarkable foresight by reserving 10 acres specifically for a future capitol building—before Nevada Territory even existed.

Carson City became a thriving commercial center following the discovery of silver and gold in the nearby Comstock Lode in 1859. The legislature designated it as the territorial capital in 1861 and later confirmed it as Nevada's permanent capital with statehood in 1864. The city served as a crucial freight and transportation hub during the mining boom.

The historic United States Mint was completed in 1869 and now houses the Nevada State Museum. The Virginia & Truckee Railroad was completed between Carson City and Virginia City that same year, with the city serving as the railroad's primary facility. By 1874, during peak Comstock production, 36 trains daily passed through Carson City, highlighting its importance to the region's development.
