Portsmouth Water Works
About Us
Portsmouth Water Works supplies residents with water from a combination of surface and groundwater sources. The primary supply comes from Bellamy Reservoir, located in Madbury and Dover. From the reservoir, water travels to the Water Treatment Facility in Madbury where it undergoes a comprehensive treatment process including:
- Coagulation
- Mixed air flotation
- Dual press filtration
Before distribution, the water receives sodium hypochlorite for disinfection, along with sodium hydroxide for pH control, hydrofluorosilicic acid for dental health, and poly/orthophosphate to prevent pipe corrosion and mineral precipitation.
The system also utilizes three groundwater wells in Madbury (Wells #2, #3, and #4) that pump alongside treated surface water through a transmission main to Newington Booster Pumping Station. Customers in Madbury, Durham, and parts of Fox Point Road in Newington receive water directly from this transmission main.
Portsmouth is additionally served by three local groundwater wells: Portsmouth Well #1 and Collins Well (located off Route 33/Greenland Road), and Greenland Well (located off Post Road). Southern Portsmouth and Greenland areas primarily receive water from the Greenland Well. The City separately manages the Pease Tradeport water system, which has its own annual water quality report available on the City's website.
