To participate in decisions affecting municipal water quality, please attend the regularly scheduled Community Board/City Council meetings. If you wish to be included in the process, contact the Village/City Clerk to be placed on the meeting agenda.

Municipal water, including bottled varieties, may contain small amounts of certain contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the EPA's Safe Water Hotline (800-426-4791).

The Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality (NDEQ) has completed a Source Water Assessment, including Wellhead Protection Area mapping, potential contamination inventory, vulnerability assessment, and protection information. To view this assessment or learn more, contact the person listed above or the NDEQ at (402) 471-6988, or visit www.deq.state.ne.us.

EPA regulations limit contaminant levels in public water systems to ensure safe drinking water. FDA regulations establish similar protections for bottled water. Water sources (tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and groundwater wells. As water travels across land or underground, it dissolves natural minerals and sometimes radioactive materials, and can pick up substances from animal or human activity.

North Platte uses surface water as its source. Potential contaminants include:

  • Microbial contaminants from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
  • Inorganic contaminants like salts and metals that occur naturally or result from urban runoff, wastewater discharge, oil/gas production, mining, or farming
  • Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential uses
  • Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile organic compounds from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, runoff, and septic systems
  • Radioactive contaminants that occur naturally or result from oil/gas production and mining
