Water, including bottled varieties, typically contains small amounts of various contaminants. The mere presence of these substances doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. To ensure tap water safety, the EPA establishes regulations limiting specific contaminant levels in public water systems.

Common water sources include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. Potential contamination sources for surface water bodies include wildlife and industrial activities (particularly urban chemicals like fertilizers and pesticides). For groundwater aquifers, contamination may come from landfills, residential septic systems, and underground storage tank leaks.

As water travels over land surfaces or through soil layers, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals, sometimes including radioactive materials, and can pick up substances from animal or human activities. For additional information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the EPA's Safe Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791 or visit drinking water.EPA.gov/drink/hotline/index.com.

Potential contaminants in untreated source water include:

  • Microbial contaminants such as viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment facilities, septic systems, and wildlife
  • Inorganic pollutants including salts and metals, occurring naturally or resulting from urban runoff and industrial/domestic wastewater discharges
  • Pesticides and herbicides from agricultural operations, urban stormwater runoff, and residential usage
  • Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile organic compounds from industrial processes, gas stations, urban runoff, and septic systems
  • Radioactive contaminants, either naturally occurring or resulting from industrial activities

SNWA monitors additional substances not regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act. The Bioenvironmental Engineering Flight (BEF) includes this information because consumers deserve transparency about potential water contaminants.

Cryptosporidium, a microscopic organism commonly found in U.S. surface waters, can cause gastrointestinal illness and fever if ingested. Filtration, sedimentation, and disinfection with ultraviolet light and ozone effectively remove this organism. SNWA diligently monitors for its presence.

Perchlorate, composed of chloride and oxygen, has been detected at low levels in untreated and treated water. Its source has been traced to shallow groundwater entering the Las Vegas Wash. While no federal limits exist for perchlorate in municipal water, SNWA closely follows Nevada Department of Environmental Protection (NDEP) efforts to intercept and remove it at the source.

SNWA operates advanced treatment facilities designed to meet Safe Drinking Water Act standards. Water drawn from Lake Mead is processed at either the Alfred Merritt Smith or River Mountains treatment facilities, where it undergoes chlorine and ozone treatment to eliminate potentially harmful microorganisms. A multi-stage filtration system removes contaminants, with additional chlorine added as the water exits the facility to maintain protection during distribution. The water also receives anti-corrosion treatment for pipeline protection.

The Nellis AFB public water system includes nine active wells alongside SNWA-supplied surface water. Three off-base wells comply with EPA's revised arsenic maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 10 ppb. Of the six on-base wells, four exceed the arsenic MCL.
