Virgin Valley Water District
About Us
Any water for consumption, including bottled water, may reasonably contain at least small amounts of various contaminants. Sources of water (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels across land surfaces or through soil layers, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and, in some instances, radioactive materials, and can absorb substances from animal or human activities.
Potential contaminants in source water before treatment may include:
- Microbial contaminants such as viruses and bacteria from sewage facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants including salts and metals, which can occur naturally or result from urban runoff, industrial discharge, or agricultural practices
- Pesticides and herbicides from various sources including stormwater runoff, agriculture, and residential usage
- Radioactive contaminants that are either naturally occurring or result from mining and exploration
- Organic contaminants, including synthetic and volatile organic compounds, which are byproducts of industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban runoff, and septic systems
The District regularly monitors for contaminants in our municipal water as required by Federal and state regulations. For additional information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the EPA hotline at 1-800-426-4791.

The Virgin Valley Water District was established by the State Legislature in 1993. The initial resources of the Water District were formed from the merger of the Mesquite Farmstead Water Association (60% contribution) and Bunkerville Water User's Association (40% contribution).
Historical development of water infrastructure in the valley includes:
- 1930: First well drilled on school grounds in Mesquite (300 feet deep)
- 1933: First "water system" connecting Bunkerville High School and ten homes
- Mid-1930s: Spring development project funded by Soil Conservation Service with labor from local residents and CCC
- 1938: Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints sponsored project to complete waterlines from "Three Mile Tank" to Bunkerville and Mesquite
- 1940s: Funding secured for basic water distribution systems managed by respective water associations
During World War II, asbestos cement pipe was used instead of steel/cast iron materials due to wartime shortages. The infrastructure and associated water rights from both water organizations formed the foundation of today's Virgin Valley Water District.
