Clean water begins at the source. Approximately 80 percent of water delivered to North Las Vegas residents originates from Lake Mead. The majority of Lake Mead's water comes from Rocky Mountain snowmelt flowing through the Colorado River. Water quality in the Lower Colorado River is monitored weekly to ensure safe, clean water for the Las Vegas Valley.

The remaining water comes from deep groundwater wells beneath the valley, which are used consistently throughout the year. Residents in western and northwestern parts of the City may receive a blend of treated Lake Mead water and groundwater. The Las Vegas Valley aquifer naturally recharges from precipitation in the Spring Mountains and Sheep Mountain Range.

The Federal Safe Drinking Water Act was amended in 1996, requiring states to develop source water assessment programs that analyze existing and potential threats to public water quality. Source water protection aims to prevent contaminants from entering public water supplies. Source (Untreated) Water Contaminants:

• Microbial contaminants, including viruses and bacteria, may come from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, or wildlife.
• Inorganic contaminants, such as salts and metals, can be naturally occurring or result from urban stormwater runoff, industrial/domestic wastewater, oil/gas production, mining, or farming.
• Herbicides and pesticides may come from various sources including stormwater runoff, agriculture, or residential users.
• Organic contaminants, including synthetic and volatile organic chemicals (byproducts of industrial processes and petroleum production), may come from gas stations, urban stormwater runoff, or septic systems.

To ensure tap water safety, the EPA establishes regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems. FDA regulations set similar limits for bottled water to provide comparable public health protection. This report presents the results of water quality monitoring performed in 2017. The EPA sets national standards for tap water to protect public health, and the Safe Drinking Water Act requires water agencies to meet these health-based standards and provide consumers with an annual water quality report. North Las Vegas's municipal water meets or exceeds all federal and state Safe Drinking Water Act requirements.
