City of Keller Municipal Water Report Info

Keller began as a small settlement in the 1850s near Double Springs, growing after the Texas Pacific Railroad announced plans to expand north of Fort Worth. The town, originally known as Athol, was renamed after John C. Keller, a railroad foreman, when it became a stop on the rail line in 1882.

The area's lush woodlands attracted settlers due to its proximity to the Trinity River, which provided abundant game, water, and fertile land for farming and cattle. With railroad access, Keller flourished as a trading hub for surrounding farms. The post office was established in 1886, replacing the one at Double Springs located about 5 miles northeast.

Initially, Keller's water infrastructure consisted of home cisterns collecting rainwater and a public well on Vine Street. In 1906, a new well was drilled on Main Street, serving until 1960. Electricity arrived in the 1880s, followed by a privately owned telephone system that operated until 1966.

The earliest school near Keller stood at Bear Creek Road and Elaine Street, established by Mount Gilead Baptist Church as a subscription school. By 1898, property was acquired at Keller Parkway (FM 1709) and College Street, where the Keller Education Center now stands.

Keller benefited from both the Texas and Pacific Railroad and U.S. Highway 377 connecting Fort Worth to Denton. The town was officially incorporated on November 16, 1955, with Joseph Knox as its first mayor. Today, Keller continues to expand with vibrant residential development in all directions, building a promising future upon its rich historical foundations.
