After the Civil War in 1865, what we now know as Woodway was established by veteran Burl Kendrick who acquired 320 sections of land on the eastern portion of present-day Woodway. In 1877, the Whitehall Church was built where modern Whitehall Park now stands on Santa Fe Drive. By 1901, Captain Kendrick deeded land for the first Whitehall School.
These two landmarks became social centers for surrounding areas until the school closed in 1918 and the church in 1924. Today, the Carleen Bright Arboretum features an exact replica of the original Whitehall Church that hosts numerous community events.
In 1922, summer retreat homes were constructed in the Rainbow Lake area. Santa Fe Drive became an official street, and the first well was drilled in 1950 – the same well that serves the City today. The area surrounding the school between Estates and Highway 84 was initially called the Village of Midway.
In May 1955, local residents met to discuss incorporation. Combining areas called Woodland West and the Village of Midway, they selected the name Woodway. On June 11, 1955, voters approved incorporation, and on June 20, the Village of Woodway was officially created with just 250 residents.
The first volunteer fire department formed in 1956, and the first police chief, John Griffin, was hired in 1963. By 1975, police and fire departments merged into the Public Safety Department. The City Hall, Police and Fire Departments were originally at 200 Sharron Drive until relocating in the 1990s and early 2000s.
The Carleen Bright Arboretum project began in 1997 and has become a premier venue for weddings, art exhibits, special events, and gatherings. From its humble beginning as a small community of 250 people in 1955, Woodway has grown into a thriving, scenic master-planned community of approximately 9,000 residents.
Throughout Woodway's history, 15 mayors have guided the city, including current mayor Don J. Baker. The city has also been served by seven City Managers throughout its history.
