About Us
Tap water, including bottled varieties, naturally contains small amounts of certain contaminants. The presence of these substances doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. Water sources (tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells.
As water travels across land or underground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals, potentially radioactive materials, and substances from human and animal activities. Common contaminants include:
- Microbiological contaminants (viruses and bacteria) from sewage, livestock, and wildlife
- Radiological contaminants (uranium, radium) from natural sources or mining operations
- Inorganic pollutants (fluoride, arsenic, salts, metals) from natural sources, farming, urban runoff, or wastewater
- Organic chemical contaminants including chlorine, trihalomethanes, and volatile organic chemicals from urban runoff, sewage, and petroleum activities
Lead Information: Elevated lead levels can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in water primarily comes from materials in service lines and home plumbing. The City of Las Vegas provides high-quality municipal water but cannot control materials used in residential plumbing. When water sits for several hours, minimize lead exposure by flushing your tap for at least 30 seconds before using water for drinking or cooking. For lead testing information, visit the New Mexico Environment Department: https://www.env.nm.gov/dwb/sampling/CertifiedLabs.htm.
Water Conservation Tip: The city offers FREE low-flow water conservation kits that can help you save up to 750 gallons monthly.
The EPA establishes and enforces regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems to protect public health. Similarly, the FDA regulates bottled water contaminant limits to provide equivalent public health protection.
