We're proud to present this year's Annual Water Quality Report (Consumer Confidence Report) as required by the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). This document outlines where your water originates, what it contains, and how it compares to standards set by regulatory agencies. This report reflects water quality over the past year. We remain dedicated to providing transparent information because informed residents are our strongest allies.

Last year, we conducted tests for more than 80 potential contaminants. Only 14 were detected, with just 1 exceeding EPA allowable levels. As previously communicated, our water temporarily exceeded municipal water standards. (For additional details, see the Violations section at the report's end.)

Do I need to take special precautions?
Some individuals may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general population. Those with compromised immune systems—such as cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune disorders, some elderly individuals, and infants—may face increased infection risks. These individuals should consult healthcare providers about water consumption. Where does my water come from?
Espanola's water is sourced from six groundwater wells distributed throughout the city. Increasing demand has been placed on these wells after others were deemed inoperable due to high natural contamination levels. We have an arrangement to purchase water from Agua Sana Water System if needed, but this connection remains closed except in emergencies.

Source water assessment availability
In 2002, the New Mexico Environment Department evaluated each well's vulnerability to contamination based on construction methods, geology, and proximity to contamination sites. Why contaminants appear in tap water
All water sources—including tap and bottled water—naturally contain some contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate health risks. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, call the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).

1. How often is my water tested?
   Espanola Water System conducts regular testing throughout the year according to EPA and state requirements. Some contaminants are tested daily, while others may be monitored quarterly or annually.
2. What causes water hardness in Espanola?
   The groundwater in our region naturally contains high levels of calcium and magnesium minerals that create hardness. This can affect appliance efficiency and soap effectiveness.
3. Is Espanola's water safe to drink?
   Yes, our water meets federal safety standards, though it may occasionally exceed guidelines for certain contaminants. We promptly address any violations and notify residents as required by law.
4. Why does my water sometimes appear cloudy or discolored?
   Temporary discoloration may occur due to system maintenance, line breaks, or seasonal changes in water sources. This typically resolves by running cold water for several minutes.
