We're pleased to present this Annual Municipal Water Quality Report (Consumer Confidence Report) as required by the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). This document provides essential information about your water source, its contents, and how it compares to regulatory standards.

Our water comes from twelve wells that tap into the main aquifer beneath the Pajarito Plateau in the Santa Fe formation. The water production team at Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities carefully oversees the pumping process to ensure quality. A comprehensive wellhead protection program safeguards this underground water source.

The County has water rights totaling 5,541.3 acre-feet annually as determined by the New Mexico Office of the State Engineer. Additionally, we have an agreement with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation for another 1,200 acre-feet per year from the San Juan/Chama project, though this source remains unutilized.

Special precautions: Individuals with compromised immune systems, including those undergoing cancer treatment, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS, some elderly residents, and infants may face higher risks from waterborne infections. These individuals should consult healthcare providers about their water consumption. The Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791) offers CDC guidelines on reducing infection risks from Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants.

All municipal water, including bottled varieties, naturally contains small amounts of certain contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For detailed information about Los Alamos' water system vulnerability, contact Jack Richardson, Deputy Utilities Manager at 505.662.8333.
