About Us
We're pleased to present this year's Annual Water Quality Report (Consumer Confidence Report) as required by the Safe Municipal Water Act (SDWA). This document provides details about your water source, its contents, and how it measures against regulatory standards.
This report reflects last year's water quality assessment. We are committed to transparency because informed residents make our best partners.
Do I need to take special precautions?
Some individuals may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general population. People with compromised immune systems—including those undergoing cancer treatment, organ transplant recipients, individuals with HIV/AIDS, some elderly residents, and infants—may face increased infection risks. These individuals should consult healthcare providers about their municipal water consumption. EPA/CDC guidelines for reducing Cryptosporidium and other microbial contamination risks are available through the Safe Water Municipal Hotline (800-426-4791).
Where does my water come from?
Your water is sourced from the Ogallala Aquifer via 48 wells located in the Sand Hill and Blackwater Draw Wellfields.
Source water assessment and availability
The Portales Water System is properly maintained and operated, with municipal water sources typically protected from potential contamination through proper well construction, hydrogeologic settings, and system management. In April 2003, the New Mexico Environment Department's Municipal Water Bureau issued a Source Water Assessment & Protection Program (SWAPP) report for Portales. The report indicates a Moderate source susceptibility ranking for the entire system. Contact Portales Water System to discuss or request the SWAPP findings.

ABOUT US
The City of Portales provides water and sewer services to local residents. Water for both Portales and Roosevelt Water Coop comes from two well fields: the Blackwater wellfield (located 10 miles northeast of town) and the Sandhill wellfield (approximately 3 miles north of Portales).
Summer water demand averages 3.5 million gallons daily (MGD). The city maintains four storage tanks with a combined capacity of 9.25 MGD.
All municipal water must meet strict federal and state requirements. Questions about your water quality can be addressed at City Hall, where copies of the Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) are available. This annual report is mailed to all water customers once yearly.
The city's wastewater treatment facility is positioned 1 mile south of Portales and processes 1 MGD of residential and commercial waste. Treated water is used for irrigation according to our New Mexico Water Quality Groundwater Discharge Permit.
