City of Portland Municipal Water Company and EPACity of Portland Municipal Water Report Info
HISTORY: Portland earned its reputation as the "Jewel City of the Gulf" for being one of the most attractive locations in Texas. Situated on a magnificent 30-40 foot bluff, it overlooks approximately 150 square miles of rolling waves and faces the deepest section of Corpus Christi Bay.
As both a summer and winter destination, Portland benefits from its mild climate and refreshing bay breezes. The area offers exceptional opportunities for sportsmen. Ducks and various game species are abundant, while the bays are rich with redfish, tarpon, and numerous other fish varieties. More seafood and shellfish are harvested from these waters than from any other location on the Gulf Coast. The area is also home to swans, cranes, herons, and other waterfowl.
The New England Land Company and New England R.E. Company acquired 1,280 acres of land east and northeast of the original 640 acres. Most shareholders of these companies resided in Portland, Maine, which inspired the town's name in tribute to their hometown.
